During one of the most challenging years in recent history, Denise Aquino and Patricia Destine, two rowers-turned-coxswains-turned-coaches who met while coaching at Row New York, have leveraged their love of rowing and their commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion to build a vibrant community of advocates within the sport. The pair launched the “Rowing in Color” podcast in January 2020 to amplify the voices of color in rowing.
Using a mission-oriented approach, Patricia and Denise continue to build out the organization, developing trainings, webinars, collaborations, consulting, and other types of publishing and advocacy. The leading athletic-wear company JL Racing launched a special line of RIC rowing apparel, and their Instagram account recently topped 5,000 followers – just saying!

Both proudly identify as women of color; Denise as Filipina American and Patricia as Haitian American. Drawing on their personal experience, they highlight what it is like to navigate as a person of color within this white-dominated sport. Denise has recently taken a position as National Inclusion Program Manager for the famed George Pocock Rowing Foundation.
